3 Day Bible Reading Plan - “The Storm”

What does this storm symbolize in the context of Jesus’ teaching? What is the true nature of the threat He is warning us about? For a long time, I understood this storm as a metaphor for the harsh realities of life, the inevitable hardships and challenges we all face. While there is certainly some truth to that interpretation, a closer examination of the surrounding verses reveals that Jesus is addressing something far more profound, a storm of much greater magnitude. The storm represents not merely misfortune or adversity, but the very judgment of God. - Pastor Paul Crandell, 6/8/25

Day 1

  • Featured Verse: Matthew 7:24-29 - “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

    • How does the metaphor of building a house on rock versus sand reflect the practical implications of living out Jesus’ teachings in everyday life?

    • In what ways does the authority of Jesus’ teaching, as noted by the crowds, differ from the religious authorities of the time, and what might this imply about divine authority today?

    • How can the concept of a “firm foundation” in this passage be applied to developing a resilient spiritual life in a modern context?

Pause and Reflect: Lord, help me to build my life on the solid foundation of Your teachings, so that I may stand firm through every storm. Grant me the wisdom and strength to not only hear Your words but to live them out faithfully each day.

“The wise builder is the man who hears Christ’s words and does them. It is not enough to hear them, nor even to understand them; you must carry them out in your lives if you would be wise unto salvation.” - Charles Spurgeon

Day 2

    • How does the imagery of a "whirlwind" reflect the nature of God’s judgment, and what might this suggest about the balance between His justice and mercy?

    • What are the theological implications of God’s judgment being directed specifically at those who lead others astray, and how might this apply to modern contexts of spiritual or moral influence?

    • How does the assurance that God’s purposes will ultimately be fulfilled shape our trust in His sovereignty when facing personal or societal turmoil?

Pause and Reflect: Almighty God, guide me to discern Your truth amidst false voices, anchoring my heart in Your sovereign purpose. Grant me understanding and faith to trust in Your righteous judgment and unchanging will, even in turbulent times.

“They tell you, No evil shall come upon you; but hear what God says, Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord has gone forth in fury. They tell you, All shall be calm and serene; but God tells you, There is a storm coming, a whirlwind of the Lord, of his sending, and therefore there is no standing before it.” - Matthew Henry

Day 3

  • Featured Verse: Luke 6:46-49 - “The ruin of that house was great.”

    • What does Jesus’ question, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?”, reveal about the relationship between verbal profession of faith and practical obedience in Christian discipleship?

    • How does this passage challenge modern believers to evaluate the authenticity of their commitment to Christ, particularly in areas where obedience may be difficult or costly?

    • In the context of Luke’s Gospel, how does the authority of Jesus’ teaching in this parable connect to His broader message about the kingdom of God and its demands on our lives?

Pause and Reflect: Lord Jesus, help me to not only call You Lord but to faithfully obey Your teachings, building my life on the solid foundation of Your word. Grant me the strength and wisdom to withstand life’s storms by living out Your truth with unwavering commitment.

“True Christianity is not a mere matter of words, but of works; not a form, but a life; not a profession, but a practice. A religion that does not influence conduct is a religion that will not stand the test of the flood and storm of God’s judgment.” - J.C. Ryle

“Jesus’ words in Luke 6:46, ‘Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?’ are a rebuke to those who claim His name but live without obedience. The wise man builds his life on the rock of Christ’s commands, and no storm can overthrow him.” - A.W. Tozer
